How to start a Decorating Project

Hi guys, we are discussing how to start your Decorating project.

So you have decided to decorate your home, but the thought though dreamy, can be overwhelming. With all the choices of fabric, color and style, decorating can be an insurmountable task. Well, here is how to start that Decorating Project.

Here is a simple guide to simplify the task. I’ll explain and hopefully this will assist you with the task.

Before you do anything, select a room and take a good look around you. Ask yourself what you like and what you dislike about the room. Take a good look at each room individually. Note the style of furniture, color, fabrics (textures and colors), that appeal to you. Pay attention to how the room makes you feel.

Once you have had a critical look at all these things, repeat what you like and don’t repeat things you don’t like. I would suggest the compilation of a list per room. Here is an example of said list per room, but it is open to modification. Add as many things to this list, to make easier for you or your designer.

Example:

Room 1 – Living Room

Feel
Comfort
Sofa Design
Rugs
Wall Art
Fabrics:
Texture
Colors
Drapes:
Hardware
Paint Color / Palette

It is of utmost importance that you decide what your tastes are, as this forms a big part of what you’ll end up with eventually. It will certainly make the task much easier for you or for your designer. Nothing is more frustrating than to change the style of drapes or sofa styles, mid project.

The most enjoyable part of the project is collecting pictures of the style you like. But remember to be realistic with your choices. Consider styles that are practical and that won’t require major changes to the structure of your home, unless this is what you wish.

Whether you enjoy flipping through magazines, exploring the web or just visiting friend and family, there are many ways to gather images of what you want for your remodeling.

Create idea books for an overall look of your whole home by mapping each room. This will give you a good idea of the cohesiveness of your choices and whether it flows throughout your home.

Note the style of furniture that pops up again and again. Generally, you know which types of rooms you like being in and which you don’t. Let this, together with the pictures, be your guide.

Remember to take your time, as there are so many choices out there. Get a feel for things and trust your instincts.

Once you have the pictures and your list, take another look around and decide which furniture pieces stays and which goes. Remember, that the items you love can be re-purposed, recovered, and paint. Don’t discard them because they don’t fit.

Finally, when all is said and done, decide whether to do it stages or in one go. Budget restraint dictates the stages option. And it is fine as this will give you time to create the home of your dreams.

I hope this helps you by breaking down the task of decorating. Look out for our post: Key measurement for your Living Room.
